I first encountered Nilofer Merchant via TED, and she immediately inspired me:

I then got the chance to see her speak at the Simmons Leadership Conference in 2014, bought her book, and never looked back. The New How: Creating Business Solutions Through Collaborative Strategy, is one of the most practical and helpful books I've ever read.

This book provides a crystal clear roadmap to deal with a common problem in businesses today: something she dubs "the air sandwich." This occurs when there's lots of productivity and information at the very bottom of the food chain (entry level employees and individual contributors working their butts off) and at the very top of the food chain (the C-suite). That leaves a huge amount of managers and executives in the middle not sure where to go or what to do.

Merchant argues that the best way to approach strategy is to connect every employee across all levels, and to encourage participation in strategic initiatives.

This will be difficult for most managers to swallow. Actually include everyone in the decision making process? How do I do that!?

Merchant walks you through the entire process and the why behind it. I was so inspired--feeling like I could make change no matter where I was in any organization--that I would definitely recommend this to anyone struggling to matter in their role, no matter where in their career they may be.
