Ann Handley Everybody Writes

I am a writer. It's what I do every day professionally, whether that's blogging, writing articles, or crafting tweets. What I love about Ann (and I am, truly, a huge fangirl) is that she created something relevant to me, the professional writer, and to literally everyone else. In today's Internet age, you are a writer if you send texts or emails. You are a writer when you write a killer Instagram caption.

I saw Ann at both Inbound 2015 and Marketing United 2016 but it took a bit of time for me to get to her book, and I'm so glad I did.

Organizing her book into concise chapters on everything from different types of content to writing great headlines, this is a book I could keep on my bedside table (but I'll settle for at my desk, silently watching and approving as I type). I loved that this book wasn't just about grammar rules to follow or to break but about the act of creating, writing, and editing something that people want to read—and that you can be proud of.

The truth is this: writing well is part habit, part knowledge of some fundamental rules, and part giving a damn.
— Ann Handley, Everybody Writes

This book showed me that my job as a marketer doesn't mean I have to throw out my passion as a writer. Even if you're not writing a personal essay or something "from the heart," you can still make an impact on someone and change the course of their day.

And if that's not why we write, I'm not sure what is.
